Gotta agree with that, but it's legacy hardware. ![]() ![]() Since Sonic Mania is purportedly a modern 2D classic, it should enjoy this wonderful input device. Historically, it has the best feel, best surface area, best comfort, and best response for all 2D gameplay titles. The Sega Genesis 6-button controller d-pad is notably less tragic, but nonetheless inferior to the Saturn d-pad. The SNES d-pad is tragic compared to the Saturn d-pad. The NES d-pad is tragic compared to the Saturn d-pad. The Xbox One d-pad is tragic compared to the Saturn d-pad. The PS4 d-pad is tragic compared to the Saturn d-pad. The Xbox 360 d-pad is tragic compared to the Saturn d-pad. Originally posted by Gunthak:Before anyone says, "But it supports controllers!" The Sonic Mania Steam forums are all SEGA, nothing to do with Christian, Headcannon or Pagodawest, so. If he gets enough requests via those methods he might make it happen. Welp, if that's the case, I'm thinkin' contacting Taxman either directly or semi-directly via PM on SonicRetro/Twitter might be a better way to get your point across. An open API with simple integration that naturally 'stacks' with any others present, like X-input. To know a superior alternative makes it extremely difficult to ever "settle" again.įrom speaking to other devs in forums (a good example mentioned above is Shovel Knight), it's rather easy to implement Direct Input support. For anyone that strictly plays pure 2D games using the d-pad on an Xbox 360/Xbox One/PS4 controller, you're unknowingly suffering frankly terrible d-pad feel and response. Originally posted by Gunthak:Alas, playing 2D action games or fighters with the d-pad on an Xbox 360 controller is like crawling through mud, hitting your thumb repeatedly with a hammer before touching the d-pad, and ultimately being handicapped by the input device itself.įor anyone that says "It's just fine" - that is settling for mediocrity. Unfortunately Sonic Mania doesn't recognize its presence! So poor.Ĭhristian, expand the game's controller support please! Outstanding for modern 2D fighting games too. In any case, it's a Direct Input-compatible controller that just about any game recognizes, making it a remarkable choice for 2D side scrollers like Shovel Knight, Symphony of the Night, any 2D emulator classics, etc. Sure, there are USB converters for the console Saturn pad, but they introduce slight latency. The official Sega Saturn USB pads are hard to find they're solid gold. Do not be fooled by the garbage imitations out there. The official USB version is an exact duplicate of the original, with authentic SLS parts. The single greatest 2D d-pad controller ever created is indeed the original Japanese-style Sega Saturn controller. ![]() We both have one, so now I'm on the fence about buying the game. My friend says his official (SLS) Sega Saturn USB controller isn't recognized by Sonic Mania. However, there's no indication that the company intends to remove Denuvo, which, for many players, is the more pressing concern. What a bummer. We're also investigating other issues like controller support these are all PC specific things that Christian and the team have been working on these last few weeks. Sonic Mania is intended to be played offline and we're investigating reports on that. "Like you, we've noticed an error in the Steam store not mentioning the DRM for Sonic Mania," it said. In response, Sega posted a message on Steam vowing to address the lack of a DRM notice and the online check. The inability to play Mania offline only served to make matters worse. Although Mania maintains a "Mostly Positive" user review average on Steam, all 10 reviews displayed on the main Steam store page-those voted by other users as the most helpful-are negative ones, citing the use of Denuvo.
